Avionics Engineer

The Avionics Engineer will design, build, integrate, and test electrical and electronic equipment for prototype experimental aircraft in a fast-paced research and development environment. The work includes vehicle electrical system layout and installation, component level hardware design, and high-level and low-level software design and development. This work will span preliminary design, critical design, development, bench testing, debugging, experimental flight test, and post flight data reduction.

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Designing, developing, testing, and integrating software and hardware to meet program requirements
• Evaluating and selecting commercial-off-the-shelf avionics subsystems
• Assisting with the system-level integration design
• Supporting testing of avionics systems and components across hardware and software
• Supporting technicians and electricians during manufacture and installation of avionics systems
• Planning, executing, and reporting on vehicle ground and flight testing
• Supporting the development and operation of test equipment
• Creating vehicle level schematics
• Documenting design issues and working with engineering teams to resolve them
• Supporting flight test mission control center operations
• Working on multiple projects at the same time

• Strong knowledge of aerospace avionics, electrical engineering fundamentals, and electrical technologies and products
• Proficiency in software development
• Strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong team player
• Bachelor of Science in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution, or substantial equivalent experience
• Ability to work in multiple engineering disciplines on an aggressive schedule
• A minimum of three years of directly related work experience, including hands-on electrical and/or avionics experience with aerospace or related systems
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship and Ability to obtain a DOD security clearance.

• Microcontroller or embedded processor programming experience
• Experience with Embedded Linux, VxWorks, or other embedded O/S
• Proficiency with C and C++
• Experience with Matlab/Simulink
• Experience with signal processing, digital communication protocols, analog and digital filters
• Experience with FPGA’s and board layout
• Rapid prototyping experience
• Aircraft homebuilding experience
• Pilot’s License
• DOD Secret Clearance
• Additional degrees or relevant work experience

Essential Job Functions:
• Occasionally required to stand, walk and sit for prolonged periods of time
• Manual dexterity and coordination are required (e.g., to operate computer keyboard)
• Requires mobility (e.g., climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl)
• Requires the ability to bend and reach
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
• Vision at close distances and the ability to adjust focus
